Males bob their heads when they see another turtle to determine its sex. Only another male will return the head bob.

Over-hunting is the greatest threat to these turtles. Not only are they a delicacy, but they’re considered a “fish” and eaten at times when people avoid eating red meat. Thankfully, there have been wildlife reserves created to begin protecting these tortoises and other animals.
