Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle

Geoemyda spengleri

  • Southeast Asia

  • Forests and cultivated land

  • Fruit
  • Insects
  • Snails
  • Worms

These turtles can move their large eyes independently of each other to watch for predators or prey.

The leaf-like shape of their shells helps them to blend into the forest floor as they sit motionless for hours watching for movement. Like many Asian turtles, this species is suffering from overharvesting by people (for food, traditional medicine, and the pet trade).
