While sexes are very similar in most of the 34 toucan species, the males of this species have black heads while the females have brown heads.

This curious and playful bird is the smallest of the toucans. Hundreds have hatched in U.S. zoos since 1988, with over a dozen hatched since 2003 at the Tulsa Zoo.
