Kaiser Newt

Neurergus kaiseri

  • Iran

  • Rivers and streams

  • Insects

Reaching only 13 cm in length, the Kaiser newt is the smallest within its genus.

It only lives in Iran and its now believed to be extinct in the wild due to habitat destruction, over-collection for the pet trade, and the predation of eggs by introduced fish species. When water is absent they are known to aestivate by burrowing into the ground until water reappears.
