Maccoa Duck

Oxyura maccoa

During the breeding season, male Maccoa ducks will ruffle feathers on their heads and patrol their territory, chasing away other males. Any females found in their territory are courted by the male inflating his neck, lowering his bill into the water, and posturing with his tail.

These ducks are built for life in the water with legs set far back on their body to help in diving for preferred food items – aquatic plants and invertebrates. The position of their legs makes it nearly impossible for them to move around on land.
