Stick Insect

Diapheromera

Range

  • The Southwest United States

Habitat

  • Desert

Diet

  • Leaves of plants, shrubs, and trees

Shaped like the branches of their host plants, most stick insects avoid predation by camouflaging themselves amongst their preferred food.

Some can even change colors to match the different seasons. If their disguise does not work, they will fall to the ground and remain motionless for hours at a time or release a foul chemical to ward off predators.
