TULSA, Okla. (July 29, 2019) – The Tulsa Zoo is hosting a dollar day food drive to benefit the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s School Pantry program. Admission for all zoo guests will be $1 on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019.
“Every zoo guest entering the zoo on Friday will only be charged one dollar,” said Patrick Weisz, director of guest services. “Zoo members, as always during normal hours, will get in for free. We are encouraging everyone to provide a food donation.”
The Tulsa Zoo community, including zoo members and daily guests, responded with overwhelming support during previous food drives, said Weisz. Guests gave 7,860 pounds during last year’s dollar day food drive.
The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s School Pantry program distributed a total of 39,740 pounds of food last year, which is equivalent of 33,117 child meals. Summer is a critical time for the program, which operates 36 active school pantries.
Any labeled, unopened, non-expired, non-perishable food item will be accepted. The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is specifically looking for the following:
“Almost 20 percent of the food needed for the School Pantry program was donated by zoo guests last year,” said Weisz. “We are a part of the community, connecting people to wildlife and wild places. We appreciate the community’s support and are proud to give back.”
