Derbyan Parakeet

Psittacula derbiana

One of the most cold-resistant parrots, their enormous beaks are adapted for ripping pinecones apart. Living in a small range of evergreen forests in the Himalayas, these birds were named in honor of the 13th Earl of Derby. Clutches of two to four eggs are laid in tree cavities yearly. Popularity as a cage-bird has led to a decrease in the already small population.
