Siamang

Symphalangus syndactylus

Range

  • Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand

Habitat

  • Tropical forests

Diet

  • Fruit
  • Leaves

Siamangs are small (lesser) apes that live high in the trees. Like all apes, they do not have tails.

They play an important role in keeping the forest healthy because they disperse the seeds of the fruit they eat. Siamangs live in family groups and are very territorial. They mate for life and have a “song” (series of calls) that is unique to the pair. Only the offspring that are not fully matured are allowed to stay in the territory.
