Sulawesi Forest Turtle

Leucocephalon yuwonoi

  • Sulawesi, Indonesia

  • Streams and rivers

  • Invertebrates
  • Vegetation
  • Fruit

The primary reason this species is so critically endangered is its popularity in the food markets of Asia.

Both sexes appear similar, but a mature male sports white markings on his head. Although they like to spend time in the water, this short-clawed turtle cannot swim well. Only discovered in 1995 and rarely observed in the wild, this species was successfully bred in captivity in 2010.
