These “antique” breeds of livestock once met the needs of early North American settlers in rugged environments. They have now been replaced by more specialized breeds used in today’s agriculture industry. Many of these old farm breeds currently face the threat of extinction.
The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) is devoted to preserving rare domestic breeds. The ALBC classifies each breed according to its remaining numbers; the classifications are critical, rare, and watch.
The Tulsa Zoo exhibits several of these antique breeds. The traits which made them valuable in the past could also make them an important genetic resource for the future of our agriculture industry.
