Tulsa Zoo is preparing to welcome giant anteaters with the planned Clayton and Gina Hughes Family Giant Anteater Habitat. This new exhibit is scheduled to break ground in 2025, in time for a fall ribbon cutting.
“This is an incredibly exciting milestone for Tulsa Zoo as we’ve never housed giant anteaters before,” said Joe Barkowski, Vice President of Animal Conservation & Science.
Located adjacent to the Rainforest, this innovative habitat will offer guests a close-up look at the unique adaptations of giant anteaters, such as their long snouts for dining on ants and termites, sharp claws for digging, and thick coats for protection.
Made possible through a generous gift from the Clayton and Gina Hughes family, the habitat will include open viewing areas, a pool and indoor and outdoor spaces to ensure the anteaters are comfortable year-round.
“Our excitement is growing as we approach Tulsa Zoo’s centennial,” Barkowski continued. “The Clayton and Gina Hughes Family Giant Anteater Habitat exemplifies our aim to create new and innovative experiences for our guests. With the support of our donors and guests, we’re building a bigger, better Tulsa Zoo for generations to come.”
Giant anteaters are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat degradation throughout its range in Central and South America. There are close to 100 animals in around 50 Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s accredited facilities.
